200,000 Total Knee Replacements Yearly Inappropriate in USScienceDaily (2014-06-30)–Use of a patient classification system has shown that more than 200,000 total knee replacements performed in the United States every year are inappropriate. The system, which was developed and validated in Spain, was utilized by a team at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. According to the study’s lead author, Dr. Daniel Riddle from the Department of Physical Therapy, the finding that more than one third of the 600,000-plus total knee replacements performed in the United States each year are inappropriate “was higher than expected” and highlights “the need to develop patient selection criteria.” Read more
